In the late 19th century, it was known as the “City of the Violet Crown”, because just after sunset the hills are known for their colorful glow. Dell’s worldwide headquarters is located in nearby Round Rock, a suburb of Austin. A number of Fortune 500 companies have headquarters or regional offices in Austin, including, Apple Inc., Cisco, eBay, General Motors, Google, IBM, Intel, Oracle Corporation, Paypal, Texas Instruments, 3M, and Whole Foods Market. The city has also adopted “Silicon Hills” as another nickname due to a rapid influx of technology and development companies. The Texas Hill Country is also perfect for outdoor recreation and it’s numerous lakes, rivers, and waterways, including Lady Bird Lake, Barton Springs, McKinney Falls, the Colorado River, Lake Travis, and Lake Walter E. SXSW draws innovators from around the world for this creative “mind-meld” of the arts and for forward-focused discussions, creative ideas and possible solutions to the many problems facing the world. South by Southwest (abbreviated as SXSW) is an annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, and music festivals, plus cultural conferences that take place every March in Austin. The city’s official slogan is “The Live Music Capital of the World”, referencing how the city attracts musicians from around the USA and for it’s live music venues, as well as the long-running PBS TV concert series “Austin City Limits.” In recent years, some Austinites have embraced their own unofficial slogan “Keep Austin Weird”, which refers to the desire to protect it’s unique creative point of view and the diverse population mix of artists, musicians, intellectuals, government workers, blue collar workers, college students, politicians, businessmen, and high-tech workers that Austin attracts – quite different from most other parts of Texas with a huge energy-based economy.Īustin is famous for its live-music scene, embracing country, blues, rock and all forms of music. In 2016, Forbes ranked Austin #1 on its “Cities of the Future” list, and in 2017Forbes placed Austin as the #1 Next Biggest Boom Town in the U.S. News & World Report ranked Austin as the #1 place to live in the U.S. The City of Austin has a population hovering around 1million, but the metro area comes in over 2.5 million people. The city borders the beautiful Texas Hill Country and is home to the main campus of the University of Texas.
